Editing track timing

Every recording’s laps are timed from a start/finish line, and each lap is broken into sections: the corners and straights between splits. The engine places both by itself. When they are not where you want them, open a recording, choose Edit timing on the track, and move them.

A lap split into sections. The white dots are splits; the chequered bar is start/finish.

The first time you open the editor, a short walkthrough shows in the editor’s own panel, under the map on a phone and beside it on a computer. Skip it whenever you like. To see it again, tap or click ? at the top of the editor, then Show the walkthrough again.

Move start/finish

  1. Choose Start/finish.
  2. Tap or click the track where the line goes, or drag the chequered bar along the track.
  3. On a phone, −1 m and +1 m move the new line a metre at a time; on a computer, the ← and → keys. Keep current puts the line back where it was.
  4. Tap or click Save. Lap numbers, lap times and every comparison are worked out again from the new line.
Moving start/finish: the dashed line marked current S/F is where it is now; the chequered bar marked new S/F is where it goes when you save.

Add a corner split

  1. Each white dot is already a split, where a corner starts or ends. To change one, drag it.
  2. For a new split, in Corner splits, tap or click + Add split, then tap or click the track where it goes. One tap or click adds one split.
  3. Changed your mind? Tap or click + Add split again before you tap or click the track (on a computer, Esc).
  4. Tap or click on or right next to a split that is already there, and the editor selects that split instead.
  5. Where a new section would be too short to time, the editor says how much room each part needs and adds nothing.
  6. On a phone, while you add a split, the stretches too close to a split are hatched.
Adding a split: with + Add split on, one tap or click on the track puts a new white dot there and cuts that section in two.

Move or remove a split

  1. In Corner splits, drag a white dot along the track.
  2. Or tap or click a dot, then −1 m and +1 m; on a computer, the ← and → keys.
  3. Remove (on a computer, the Delete key) takes the split away: the two sections either side become one.
  4. Tap or click a section to see it. On a phone, Details renames it or changes it between corner and straight; on a computer, the list beside the map does.
Moving a split: drag the white dot along the track. The sections either side grow and shrink to match.

Undo

  1. Undo takes back the last change, and Redo puts it back. On a phone, Redo is under ⋯ (More); on a computer, Ctrl Z or ⌘ Z undoes, and adding Shift redoes.
  2. Right after a change, the editor shows it for ten seconds with Undo at its end: under the map on a phone, at the top of the map on a computer.
  3. Cancel leaves without saving. When you have changes, it asks first. Nothing is saved until you tap or click Save.
Undo puts the last change back: the dot returns to where it was.

After you save: why new lap times take a while

  1. Save sends your change. The editor closes as soon as the server has it, and the page says Changes saved. Updating lap times in the background. You can leave this page.
  2. Every lap is found and timed again with your change, and every comparison is redone, so new lap times take a while. Meanwhile Edit timing reads Updating lap times…
  3. The page you saved on keeps the lap times it has, marked Lap times from before your change. A page opened while the update runs (a reload, another phone) shows Available when lap times finish updating where the analysis goes.
  4. When the update finishes, the page shows the new laps by itself.
  5. If the update fails, the page says why, and your previous lap times stay as they were. Edit again opens the editor again. If you contact us, quote the reference beside it (it starts with E-).
  6. If only the start/finish move was refused, your sections are kept, and Move start/finish again lets you try the line again.
After Save: your change is kept at once, and the new lap times follow when the update finishes. You can leave meanwhile.

GoPro and RaceBox

A GoPro recording and a RaceBox recording use the same editor and the same steps: start/finish, splits, Save and the update after it work the same way.

A RaceBox recording has no video, so there is no video panel and no video bar: the track map takes the space.

A RaceBox recording has no camera accelerometer. Chassis Load and the Mount calibration tab in Engineer view need one, so they are not shown for it. Cornering G comes from GPS and is there for both.

Words used here

Start/finish
The line where every lap starts and ends. Moving it renumbers the laps and changes their times.
Split
Where one section ends and the next begins: a white dot on the track.
Section
A corner or a straight, from one split to the next. Each lap’s time is broken down by section.
Lap times update
After you save, every lap is found and timed again with your change. It runs on the server, so you can leave the page. If it fails, your previous lap times stay.

How laps are found and timed is explained in the methodology: Lap detection and Lap delta.
